A major fire roared through an affordable housing development under construction near Redwood City, California.
Developer Mercy Housing California said it remains committed to the 179-unit Middlefield Junction project, which has been in construction for over a year and is the result of almost a decade of community planning. No one was injured in the June 3 fire.
“As soon as it is safe for our teams, and following a thorough investigation, we will return to work at the Middlefield Junction site to assess the damage and make a plan to move forward with construction,” said Mercy Housing California officials in a statement. “We hope residents and partners will trust in our resolve to deliver the affordable homes and childcare spaces that San Mateo County communities deserve and need.”
The development consists of two buildings, both of which have been under construction.
Building B, which features 104 units, was destroyed, according to a statement by builder Roberts-Obayashi. The company called it the worst disaster its in 92-year history.
Building A, which will include 75 units and a child care center, was not impacted, said officials.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
