A 56-unit affordable housing community has opened for families in Coachella, California.
Developed by nonprofit Community Housing Opportunities Corp. (CHOC), Placita Dolores Huerta is named after the labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.
“Many of the farmworkers Señora Huerta dedicated her life to supporting and protecting are among the families who make this community their home. They’re the hardworking women and men who grow our food, educate our children, and keep our communities safe,” said Manuela Silva, CEO of CHOC. “Placita Dolores Huerta ensures that residents can raise their families in a dignified and stable environment. There are countless people in this area who struggle to live in the very communities that they serve. This community will have a life-changing impact on the families who call it home, allowing them to build a prosperous future for generations to come.”
The $44 million complex offers a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Amenities include laundry facilities, a computer lab that supports educational and professional needs, a splash pad and playground where families can socialize, and outdoor barbecue gathering spaces. In addition, there are resident programs tailored to meet their specific needs.
The development was funded by a mix of local, state, and federal sources, including a city of Coachella loan, Riverside County Home funds, and low-income housing tax credits awarded by the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee. Additional financial was provided through the American Rescue Plan Act and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. As part of the funding structure, Placita Dolores Huerta will remain affordable for at least the next 55 years.
A second phase is being planned.
