A Senate committee approved the nomination of San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro to be secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Wednesday.

Members of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee voted 16-6 to recommend Castro to the post, with 12 Democrats and four Republicans in support. The final vote will now go to the full Senate.

“As the housing market continues to recover and Congress continues its efforts to reform the housing finance system, it is critical that HUD has a strong leadership team in place. Mayor Castro has on-the-ground experience with the challenges faced by local communities and the role that HUD can play in addressing these issues,” said Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), committee chairman.

Castro, if approved by the full Senate, will replace Shaun Donovan, who has been tapped to be director of the Office of Management and Budget.
