Public housing authorities (PHAs) across the nation, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have received nearly $1.8 billion for large-scale improvements to their public housing units.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the grants through its Capital Fund Program, which offers funding to approximately 3,100 PHAs to build, renovate, and modernize the public housing in their communities.
“Every American deserves a place to call home where they can successfully raise their kids, enhance their financial security, and build a better life,” said HUD Secretary Julián Castro in a statement. “Through this funding, HUD is committed to strengthening our nation’s affordable housing units and to providing folks with the springboard they need to succeed.”
HUD released a study in 2011 that estimated that the nation’s 1.1 million public housing units face $25.6 billion in large-scale repairs. The agency’s Rental Administration Demonstration program complements the Capital Fund Program to preserve and improve the affordable housing stock.
