Advocates around the country will be calling for increased federal investment in affordable housing and community development during a national week of action called Our Homes, Our Voices, beginning Saturday, July 22.
Events will include rallies, teach-ins, and gatherings to write letters and call members of Congress.
The series of events come at a time when three out of four families that qualify for federal assistance are turned away due to a lack of funding and a half million people are homeless on any given night. The action also comes as the Trump administration is proposing significant cuts to key housing programs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“It is essential that we raise our voices in support of our homes and communities,” said Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, who serves on the event’s planning committee. “Increasing access to affordable homes—especially in areas connected to good schools, well-paying jobs, health care, and transportation—helps families climb the economic ladder and leads to greater economic and community development. We will work alongside our national and local partners to not only stop the devastating cuts to housing investments proposed by the Trump administration, but to ensure that everyone—especially those with the lowest incomes—has an affordable place to call home.”
