Developed by Housing Visions, VanKeuren Square provides 50 affordable homes for veterans in Syracuse, N.Y. Half of the apartments are for those who have been chronically homeless and have project-based HUD-VASH vouchers, which provide residents with rental assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and services from Veterans Affairs.
There are 44 one- and six two-bedroom apartments. In addition, the development features a leasing/management office and several common space areas where residents can gather and interact, including a community room, computer lab, workout room, outdoor patio, and community garden.
The urban infill project represents not just a sanctuary and fresh start for homeless Veterans but a large-scale neighborhood revitalization effort.
