Park Street School is just one of several recent redevelopment projects in Kennebunk, Maine. "The town has gone through a lot of effort to rehab its downtown," says Matt Peters, development officer for Avesta Housing.
Several former teachers and graduates of the Park Street School regularly attend the Community Cafe events held in the project's common area.
Built in the 1920s, the Park Street School had been vacant since closing in 2005.
In addition to the school rehab, Avesta Housing built another 18 apartments in a new addition.
Park Street School was one of six real estate projects statewide that received a 2012 Notable Projects Award from the Maine Real Estate & Development Association.
