Oakland, Calif.
Developed by Satellite Affordable Housing Associates, the 92-unit Lakeside Senior Apartments brings affordable senior housing to Oakland, Calif. More than 3,000 people applied for the apartments.
The five-story development is in a prime neighborhood on the shores of Oakland’s Lake Merritt. The building is topped by a fifth-floor suite of community spaces, including garden plots for residents, a community room and kitchen, outdoor decks, and a wellness studio.
Designed by David Baker Architects, Lakeside Senior Apartments has earned several awards. In addition to the affordable apartments, there are community rooms, a community garden, and lushly landscaped outdoor space. At the LEED Platinum building, solar hot water panels and photovoltaic electric panels reduce the use of energy in the common areas.
The development features 91 one-bedroom units and one two-bedroom apartment for the manager. Thirty-unit units are reserved for residents who were homeless, have a physical disability, or are challenged by mental illness. These apartments serve residents earning no more than 20% of the area median income (AMI), while 59 units are reserved for those earning no more than 50% of the AMI.
