Evergreen Lofts

Evergreen Health, in conjunction with Southern Tier Environments for Living, converted the former Buffalo Trunk Manufacturing Co. facility that was built at the turn of the century into affordable housing in Buffalo, N.Y. Evergreen Lofts provides 56 units of affordable housing to individuals and families who are marginally housed or struggling with homelessness.

The design preserves much of the original structure, including exposed wood beams and columns, exposed brick, and the main stairwell. All exterior windows were replaced with historically correct metal-clad wooden windows, and brick repointing and structural repairs to the exterior masonry were completed. A special display case features antique trunks that were manufactured on-site.

The development provides a mix of 56 one-, two-, and three-bedroom energy-efficient apartments, including six accessible to residents with mobility impairment and two accessible to residents with audio/visual impairment. Energy Star heating and cooling equipment, appliances, and light fixtures; water-conserving plumbing fixtures; and daylight sensors on all exterior lighting were added. In addition, low- or no-VOC paints, primers, adhesives, and sealants were used, and an active radon mitigation system installed.

A new lobby and community room inside and a new main entrance complete with new signage, exterior canopies, and a private courtyard complete the building's aesthetic.
