Blue Sea Development's Arbor House in the South Bronx serves households earning 60 percent or less of the area median income.
The development, which features a rooftop hydroponic farm, has earned LEED-Platinum, National Green Building Gold, and Energy Star certifications.
A precast concrete and brick panelized wall system provides an enhanced airtight envelope. The project went up from foundation to roof within 40 days.
Blue Sea Development is partnering with Boston-based Sky Vegetables on the hydroponic farm. Forty percent of the produce will be made available to the community through local outreach to schools, hospitals, and markets.
The development held its grand opening in February, and the initial plan is for the farm to grow leaf crops and then expand into other vegetables.
The building, which has been designed to meet the NYC Active Design Guidelines to promote physical fitness and reduce obesity, includes a fully equipped gym.
Also included to encourage more physical activity are outdoor fitness and play areas.
The decorative metal screens on the building were designed by artist Beatrice Coron.
