Mercy Housing announced that it will be hiring a senior vice president of racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI).
The creation of this role reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that the communities it serves are racially equitable and inclusive and continuing the REDI team’s work, said the national nonprofit, which has a presence in 41 states and serves more than 45,000 residents through affordable housing and services.
Other housing organizations are also thinking more about diversity this year. At Fannie Mae, multifamily housing veteran Jeffery Hayward announced that he is moving to a new enterprise-wide role as chief administrative officer, a position that has a broad scope, including human resources, enterprise workplace, and diversity and inclusion.
Mercy Housing’s REDI team’s focus includes:
- Resident Services: Pilot inclusive resident meetings that build community to promote inclusion, equity, and Mercy Housing’s core values of respect, justice, and mercy.
- Administration: Incorporate racial equity into Mercy Housing’s core value of justice. Embed racial equity into values-based behaviors and annual performance reviews.
- Property Management: Review all community rules and regulations through a racial equity lens.
- Affordable Housing Portfolio: Require a racial equity analysis for each deal in consideration.
The organization said its senior vice president of REDI “will be a culture builder, thought leader, and a developer of partnerships to create an inspiring vision across the organization. This position comes at a prolific time in our nation’s history, as communities work to end systemic racism and cycles of poverty.”
