A Mercy Housing affordable housing property in Joplin, Mo., was struck by Sunday’s deadly tornado.
Residents of Mercy Village were evacuated and safe.
The 66-unit development is on the campus of St. John’s Regional Medical Center, one of the hardest-hit areas of the city. Images of the wrecked hospital were among the photos to emerge shortly after the tornado swept through Joplin.
Mercy Housing staff was working to assess the damages to its property.
Some staff members from the Denver headquarters were also planning to fly to the area to assist.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of the emergency. The tornado claimed more than 100 lives and injured at least 1,150 people, according to news reports Monday afternoon. Search-and-rescue efforts were under way for more victims.
