Alex Marte

Alex Marte has been central to the development of affordable housing communities in New York City and beyond.

He joined Gilbane Development in 2021, moving up the ranks to become senior development director this year. During his career, he has helped develop approximately 3,800 affordable homes.

His impactful projects include Renova West, a 19-story mixed-use development that will soon bring 266 affordable and supportive homes and a Bronx Health Hub to New York City.

Marte, 39, also served as a co-lead developer for Linden Grove, a 153-unit senior housing community in Brooklyn. The 13-story building is touted as the tallest affordable modular passive housing building in the country.

Before turning his focus to development, Marte gained experience in finance and policy, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of affordable housing. Before joining Gilbane, Marte was an underwriter at TD Bank, where he managed a $100 million portfolio of affordable housing loans. He has also held roles at the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Federal Homes Loan Bank of New York.

He is a former squad leader in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is reflecting on the many people whose collaboration brings affordable housing from financing and construction to successful operation.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by the opportunity to provide individuals and families in greatest need with more than just housing—a high-quality home that allows them to focus on their work, families, and health.

What impact do you hope your work has on residents and communities?

I hope the households we serve can focus on advancing their careers and creating the best opportunities for their children, rather than worrying about finding stable housing.

If you could share one lesson with someone just starting their career in affordable housing, what would it be?

Start with a genuine passion for the work and the policies that make affordable housing possible. Let that passion drive you to understand low-income housing tax credits and finance, build strong relationships and partnerships, and engage with ideas that can advance meaningful change. With curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to keep learning, the rest will follow.
