THE LOCAL INITIATIVES SUPPORT CORP. (LISC) invested $826 million in equity, loans, and grants in 2008 as part of its Building Sustainable Communities work.
These dollars financed nearly 14,000 affordable homes and 3.5 million square feet of retail and community space, including 18 schools serving 8,800 students and nine child care facilities. In all, LISC helped support more than $2.8 billion in total development activity in low- and moderate-income communities during the year.
LISC's Building Sustainable Communities effort is a comprehensive approach to community investment and family well-being that considers affordable housing as well as access to health care, schools, retail development, and job creation.
