Julian Castro, former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), officially announced what has long been speculated—he's running for president of the United States.

Castro, former mayor of San Antonio, made the announcement in his hometown, where he begins a "campaign that will look to turn his uniquely American immigrant story into a direct repudiation of President Donald Trump," reports Dan Merica of CNN.
A number of other high-profile Democrats are expected to seek the nation's top post, and Castro understands that he's an underdog.
"I am not a frontrunner in this race, but I have not been a frontrunner at any time in my life," Castro said, adding that people who grew up in the neighborhoods he grew up in were never considered frontrunners. "I am going to go speak to them in a way that resonates with them."
Castro served as HUD secretary under President Obama.
