Fair housing advocates are suing the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to compel it to follow a rule meant to help prevent segregation and comply with the Fair Housing Act. The suit also names HUD Secretary Ben Carson, reports NPR's Bill Chappell. He writes:
The federal lawsuit stems from HUD's decision in January to postpone an Obama administration rule requiring communities that get HUD funding to submit fair housing assessments — a step that required recipients to study how inclusive their communities are and plan how to overcome historic segregation.
