The Housing Partnership Network has received a $1.5 million MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
It is one of only 13 nonprofit organizations around the world and eight in the United States to receive the MacArthur Foundation award, which recognizes exceptional grantees and helps ensure their long-term sustainability. The Network's award was the largest granted in the 2013 round.
The Network will use its award to create a new Research and Development Fund to accelerate innovation and reduce the costs and time required to launch new ventures. In an era of diminishing public resources—when millions of families pay more than half of their incomes for a place to live and foreclosures destabilize neighborhoods—Network members are working together to find new, more cost-effective ways to improve people's lives with affordable homes in good communities and linkages to resident services, said the organization.
"This award is a tribute to the shared impact of our 100 members—many of the nation's leading affordable housing nonprofits—who work together through the Network to develop innovative solutions to complex, systemic challenges," Tom Bledsoe, Network president and CEO, said in a statement. "This award recognizes their collective creativity and effectiveness and the real difference they are making for millions of people across the United States."
Headquartered in Boston, the organization is a collaborative of the leading housing and community development nonprofits.
