Lourdes M. Castro Ramirez, president and CEO of the San Antonio Housing Authority, has been nominated by President Obama to become assistant secretary for public and Indian housing.

She has held the top post at the housing authority since 2009. Prior to that, Castro Ramirez held different positions at the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, including director of the Sec. 8 department from 2006 to 2009. She was a community development planner for Cabrillo Economic Development Corp. in Ventura, Calif., from 1996 to 1999. Her selection was among 10 nominations announced by the White House last week.

The announcement came the same week that Julian Castro, who was mayor of San Antonio, was sworn in as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Castro Ramirez would replace Sandra Henriquez, who left HUD in June after serving as assistant secretary for five years.
