Woodhill Station West is leading the transformation of Cleveland’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood.

Replacing an empty lot, the 120-unit development marks the first phase of an ambitious Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) plan to replace the area’s aging public housing projects and revitalize the surrounding community.

A $35 million federal CNI implementation grant was awarded to the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority and the city of Cleveland in 2021. They teamed with nonprofit developer The Community Builders (TCB) to bring new housing to the neighborhood.

“Woodhill Station West is a catalyst for transformation in the Cleveland community, symbolizing new beginnings and the fulfillment of a promise to residents,” says Patricia Belden, TCB executive vice president of development. “As the first of six phases, it offers residents a safe, pride-worthy place to call home. Over the next five years, we will create more than 600 beautiful apartments in the Woodhill neighborhood with great amenities at affordable rents for families.”

Located near public transit, the new development features 42 one-, 62 two-, and 16 three-bedroom affordable homes. Ninety apartments are replacement units for residents of the nearby Woodhill Homes public housing development that is being demolished.

Beyond housing, Woodhill Station West is providing TCB’s Community Life services to residents and new opportunities to the neighborhood, including a construction training program that was completed by 12 area residents during the building of the new homes.

With Woodhill Station West as a model, the next phases are underway.
