A new 100-unit affordable housing community has opened on the site of the former Daniel Brooks Homes in High Point, North Carolina.
Legacy Ridge features 32 one-, 56 two-, and 12 three-bedroom apartments for households earning up to 60% of the area median income, with 28 homes designated as project-based rental assistance units.
Laurel Street, a multifamily residential developer, worked in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of High Point on the new community.
The name Legacy Ridge was chosen to honor the contributions of current African-Americans leaders who are shaping High Point into the vibrant city it is today, according to officials.
Just as the original Daniel Brooks Homes, the oldest housing authority property in the city, was named for a prominent African-American leader in High Point, Legacy Ridge will have features throughout the development named in honor of African-Americans who have made and continue to make contributions in High Point. The names of individuals that will be honored at Legacy Ridge were announced at the grand opening ceremony. They are Carlvena Foster, Chris Williams, Dr. Lillie Jones, William Hayes, Angela Jimenez, and Robert Brown.
“Legacy Ridge represents a new beginning for the former Daniel Brooks Homes site,” said Charity Bunting, board chair of the housing authority. “We wanted to use the opportunity to tell the story of Daniel Brooks Homes and what it meant to so many High Point families but also celebrate new beginnings through Legacy Ridge by honoring African-Americans who have made a difference and continue to make a difference in High Point.”
Legacy Ridge was made possible through $10.1 million in local and federal public financing from the housing authority and the city of High Point along with $11.3 million in low-income housing tax credit equity from Red Stone Equity Partners, and a $6.9 million permanent loan and a $14 million construction loan from Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust.

The development was designed by project architect Cline Design and civil engineer JC Waller & Associates. LSR Construction and Harmon Construction provided site work on Legacy Ridge with Davie Construction as the contractor for vertical construction. Laurel Street is the managing partner and, along with its affiliated property management company, LSA Management, provides day-to-day ownership and management of Legacy Ridge.
At the grand opening, a documentary about the history of Daniel Brooks Homes and the building of Legacy Ridge was unveiled.
