Urban Finalist: The Jefferson

The Jefferson replaces a vacant lot that had been the site of drug dealing and shootings.

A vocal and engaged neighborhood advocacy organization, the 12th Avenue Stewardship Committee, had long advocated for more workforce housing and transit in the area.

Built to exceed the Washington state Evergreen Sustainable Development Standard, The Jefferson uses innovative technology like integrated heat recovery ventilation units that transfer heat from exhaust air into fresh air to reduce heating costs.

“Looking south, the apartments have fairly remarkable views of the mountains and the city,” says Christopher Persons, CEO of Capitol Hill Housing.

"The building’s lobby utilizes people-powered urban transit as sculpture," according to Capitol Hill Housing. A line of wall-mounted bike racks greets residents and visitors immediately upon entry.
