Ashland Place

San Leandro, Calif.

Resources for Community Development combined several underutilized lots to create Ashland Place, which includes 85 units of affordable family apartments and 2,000 square feet of community-serving commercial space, in the unincorporated area of Ashland in southern Alameda County, Calif.

Ashland Place adds to the community revitalization efforts underway in the neighborhood. The commercial space is slated to be part of Alameda County's economic development strategy for a food hub for small local businesses.

With parking on the perimeter of the site, ample space was left for a large inner courtyard with a tree-lined central green, a built-in barbecue, a children's play area, and a sculptural wood and steel canopy.

Ashland Place features 29 one-, 29 two-, and 27 three-bedroom units for residents earning between 30% and 50% of the area median income. In addition, 15 units are set aside as supportive housing for low-income young adults who don't have family support systems.
