Green Points: Recognition from the Portland, Ore.-based Green Building initiative came for this project’s ability to minimize emissions, ozone-depleting substances, effluents and hazardous materials; implement strategies to ensure a good indoor environment; and the reuse of an existing building to reduce urban sprawl, conserve open space and recycle. The building earned one globe from GBI under its Green Globes rating system. The 9,600-square-foot (892-m2) building accommodates doctors and employees of the institute, who offer fertility services and advanced gynecologic medical and surgical treatments.

This book shares the basics in foundations, framing, wall systems and roofs through the shared experiences of teachers, students and seekers. The value of natural building is told in four parallel stories. It’s a primer about low-impact and very accessible building techniques, materials and approaches, as well as a narrative of shared experiences and camaraderie.

The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council opened its first 30-day public comment period for proposed changes in how the LEED green building rating system awards points for the use of certified wood. Currently, only wood products certified by the Reston, Va.-based Forest Stewardship Council are eligible for LEED points. The proposed change aims to set forth a clear set of metrics that any forest certification system can meet to be recognized by LEED. Under the newly proposed credit language, wood certification systems would be evaluated for eligibility to earn points against a measurable benchmark that includes governance, technical/standards substance, accreditation and auditing, and chain of custody and labeling. The comment period will close on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. PST. For more information, visit www.usgbc.org.
