Showcasing the Nation’s Top Affordable Housing Developments

Here they are—the finalists for Affordable Housing Finance’s sixth annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Affordable Housing Finance received more than 140 nominations this year, and with the help of the magazine’s editors, we carefully selected 33 finalists in nine categories. It was a hard task whittling the entries down to the final selections, with much last-minute debate of which projects would make the cut and which ones wouldn’t.

But I think again this year we did a great job of choosing a diverse group of outstanding finalists that really shine and stand out as models for other developers across the nation. These finalists represent 17 states, plus the District of Columbia. Three developments are part of the rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina—Emerald Pines in Gulfport, Miss.; The Terraces on Tulane in New Orleans; and The Crescent Club in New Orleans. Hooper Bay Affordable Housing Project in Hooper Bay, Alaska, has created much-needed affordable housing for this small rural village after a fire destroyed more than 30 structures in 2006. And Sandywoods Farm in Tiverton, R.I., combines affordable and market-rate housing with a working farm and artists’ space.

Look for the July/August issue in your mailbox or online in the middle of July to read more about the finalists. And then it’s up to you—the readers—to choose the most deserving in each category and which development should be the overall winner. Go to www.housingfinance.com from July 16 to Aug. 13 to vote. Voting is open to only Affordable Housing Finance subscribers.
Congratulations to all of the finalists as well as to all of the financiers, service providers, and government agencies who helped to make these developments a reality and a home for many low-income Americans.
