Honoring the Young Leaders and Pioneers of the Industry

We think it’s important at Affordable Housing Finance to pay tribute to those industry leaders who have been trailblazers in serving low-income Americans throughout their careers as well as the up-and-coming leaders who are ushering in new ways of doing things and helping to build organizations and affordable housing.

We created the Affordable Housing Hall of Fame in 2006 and have inducted 21 pioneers and leaders from different sectors of the industry, including Enterprise’s Bart Harvey, Rep. Barney Frank, Nixon Peabody’s Chuck Edson, National Council of State Housing Agency’s John McEvoy, Richard Baron of McCormack Baron & Salazar, and the late Terrence Duvernay, who headed the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Georgia Housing Finance Agency.

Affordable Housing Finance only has been recognizing the young leaders of the industry for the past two years. But we’ve seen a lot of commitment and excellence out of these 27 rising stars who represent the development, finance, and policy sides of the industry.

Now it’s time to select the next round of inductees for the Hall of Fame and the 2010 Young Leaders. They will be featured in the October “Leadership Issue” of Affordable Housing Finance and honored at a luncheon at the conclusion of AHF Live: The 2010 Affordable Housing Developers’ Summit, Nov. 3-5, at the Fairmont Millennium Park in Chicago.

Please think about those who have made a difference over the years as well as those who are starting to make changes in the industry today. Send your nominations for the Hall of Fame and Young Leaders to me at cserlin@hanleywood.com by June 2.

Guest Commentary: Climate Change Solutions Within Industry’s Reach
April 22 marked the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, which was launched in 1970 as a grassroots rallying cry to recognize the degradation our human impact was having on the planet. The urgent need to harness renewable energy at a large scale and to curb climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions has been underscored recently through several high-profile events. Earth Day fell during the same month this year as the death of 29 West Virginia coal miners and as earthquakes and tornadoes devastated communities both globally and locally.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call for 2010 Young Leader Nominations

Think about the young people you have met in your work and help us identify those special individuals who you think can build organizations, lead programs, usher in new ways of doing things, and solve common problems in the affordable housing industry. Affordable Housing Finance is looking for people from all disciplines, whether its development, finance, law, accounting, or government program administration who are younger than 40. They don’t have to be workaholics, but they need to be dedicated and hard-working people who have demonstrated that they are committed to the mission of affordable housing and community development.

To nominate someone, please e-mail Christine Serlin at cserlin@hanleywood.com telling us why you think the person has leadership ability, making sure to tell us the following:
• where they work and job title
• how you know them, and for how long
• how long they have worked in the industry
• what qualities make them potential leaders
• what you know about their philosophy, purpose, or career goals
• outstanding specific accomplishments that show leadership skill
• their age, if you know it
• their contact information
• their resume, if you have it
We suggest you keep your nomination confidential, as will we. We will be selective in determining who to profile in the magazine, so we don’t want to raise anyone’s hopes. Nor do we want this to be viewed as a career-advancement or resume-building tool. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, June 2, 2010.
