The Small Things Count
I spent most of last week on calls with Affordable Housing Finance’s Readers’ Choice Awards finalists (we’ll be announcing the finalists in July). The developers of these properties shared the most wonderful stories about their residents and what that housing means to those families. I couldn’t get one specific story out of my head over the weekend. It was my last call on Friday, and it was with a service provider at a supportive-housing development in Southern California. She recently received 20 boxes of donated children’s books and let the children from the development come into her office to pick the ones they wanted. She said they were so excited about the opportunity, and some even left carrying stacks of books. The parents also were pleased, saying it would help the children keep up their reading skills over the summer.
And then President Obama’s summerlong United We Serve, which focuses on the goal of a sustained, collaborative, and focused effort to meet community needs and make service a way of life, kicked off Monday. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan spent Monday working on homes in New Orleans, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke read to children in a Mesa, Ariz., homeless shelter. After reading and hearing about how all these extra efforts are creating a positive effect in these communities, I came to the realization that I needed to do something extra myself. Don’t get me wrong, I contribute to specific causes, and my husband and I are a big couple to a 13-year-old through Big Brothers Big Sisters. But I wanted to do something specific to affordable housing.
I loved the book story so much that I decided to call a local developer here in the Boise, Idaho, area yesterday morning about the possibility of donating books for their summer and after-school programs. The woman I spoke with sounded excited. I hope the kids are just as excited when I make the book delivery.
It might be a small gesture, but if others go out and volunteer or contribute in their communities, they all add up to make a huge difference.
