Wearing of the green. Everyone is Irish at this time of year, but is everyone also green? It’s much more than a rhetorical question. Local governments have recognized the benefits of becoming more green, in the environmental sense of the word. Some of them are moving rapidly to require builders to reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption of their structures. That could easily lead to a plethora of conflicting requirements from town to town and state to state. But fortunately, the National Association of Home Builders and the International Code Council are about to come out with a model green building code that we hope will be adopted by local building code authorities. Read about it in the next issue of AFT, and if you have any pull with your local building inspector, make sure they know about it.

NMHC’s Apartment Compensation and Benefits Survey Launches March 24
The National Multi Housing Council’s annual National Apartment Survey of Compensation and Benefits Practices will launch March 24. The survey, which is open to all apartment firms, can be completed online and must be filled out by May 9. The survey is widely viewed as the industry's premier benchmark for compensation and benefits, and it is the only one that offers metro-level compensation information for 65 jobs. Firms that fill out a questionnaire now get a significant discount on the price of the report when it is published this summer.
Housing Policy
APARTMENT FINANCE TODAY wants to send the candidates for president a message about housing, and we need your help. Our initiative is called Americans for a New Federal Housing Commitment. We are gathering input to reach industrywide consensus on 10 policy objectives for the president in his or her first 100 days in office. We will also formulate 10 steps for the next secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Then, with your help, we’ll enlist support from opinion leaders across America—not just from housing, but also from business, the media, the faith community, civic and labor organizations, and so on. Click here to take the survey and share your input.
