MacArthur Foundation Names New President

By Donna Kimura

Robert Gallucci, dean of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, will take over as president of the MacArthur Foundation on July 1.

He will replace Jonathan Fanton, who is nearing the end of his second five-year term and announced last year that he would be leaving in 2009.

Gallucci, 63, brings 21 years of government service to the foundation. He has served as an ambassador-at-large and special envoy for the U.S. State Department. He was chief negotiator during the North Korean nuclear crisis of 1994. Gallucci also served as assistant secretary of state for political and military affairs from 1992 to 1993.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has a long history of funding affordable housing. In February, it announced a $32.5 million investment in affordable housing preservation in 12 states and cities.
