FREELANCE GUIDELINES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE MAGAZINE

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE is a monthly magazine covering the affordable housing industry.

Broadly defined, affordable housing is housing serving persons earning less than the area median income. We focus most coverage on rental housing that uses assistance such as federal low-income housing tax credits and tax-exempt bond financing, state and local grant and loan programs, and private nonprofit and for-profit community development programs.

AHF is written for a knowledgeable audience of housing developers and related professionals (lenders, syndicators, attorneys and accountants). It is distributed nationally.

To be considered for feature assignments, writers should have a background in finance or real estate, with clips on housing, finance or real estate published in other business periodicals.

We are interested in feature stories that are of national interest to developers or financiers, and news items on innovative housing projects, private financing initiatives, and housing programs administered by state or local governments.

We are looking for the following types of contributions:

  • News on private debt and equity financing for affordable housing (new financing sources or trends in financing).
  • Innovative state and local housing finance agency programs, or changes in these programs (in requirements or funding deadlines).
  • Profiles of innovative firms in the affordable housing field.
  • Case studies of interesting techniques used to finance development or restructuring of affordable housing projects. (Case studies should include a detailed breakdown of project financing, including sources and uses of funds, and details on the terms of all financing, as well as photos of the project.)

Emphasis

AHF emphasizes practical news and advice that readers can use in their business, and looks for concrete information and perspective in all stories. Real examples and practical details should be included in all features. Practical impact and relevance should be detailed in all news items. (Generalizations that might be acceptable for a non-professional audience are not acceptable for our purposes.)

Length of articles

  • News items: 100 to 700 words.
  • Features: 750 to 2,000 words.

How to query

Interested writers should submit a query letter with relevant writing samples. Queries should include a synopsis of the proposed article and a list of sources the author intends to use. Illustration ideas are requested to accompany all feature ideas. (Photos and tables are encouraged.) Contact Executive Editor Christine Serlin.

Well-prepared queries will receive a quick response. Please do not telephone regarding your submission.

Payment

Payment for freelance submissions is at the rate of 35 cents to 50 cents per word, depending on the complexity of the story and experience of the writer.

Assignments

Assignments may only be made in writing by the editor. No kill fee will be offered and no acknowledgment will be made for unsolicited articles submitted on speculation.
