Smile, You're on Camera

The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) has announced a $23 million camera initiative that will feature the installation of 3,000 cameras at its senior and family housing developments.

The funds were made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. About $19 million will be used for cameras at the family developments, and $2.8 million for the seniors housing.

Siemens Technologies was awarded the contract.

The remainder of the stimulus funds awarded to CHA—about $143 million—will be used to rehabilitate 900 units of public housing and to proceeds with needed demolition of "non-viable" buildings to improve the safety of the surrounding communities, said officials.
