Housing Leader John B. Rosenthal Dies

John B. Rosenthal, founder and chairman emeritus of Pennrose Properties, died Monday of prostate cancer in New York.

After working for affordable housing developers in New York City, he established Pennrose in Philadelphia in 1981 and was one of the first developers to use low-income housing tax credits.

Mr. Rosenthal built new developments and preserved old buildings for use as affordable housing. In West Philadelphia, he renovated Regent Terrace, an abandoned complex and turned it into housing for 80 families. The work was recognized by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's Bureau for Historic Preservation. His firm also renovated the People's Emergency Center, a homeless shelter in the city, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Mr. Rosenthal's work earned him several honors, including the F. Otto Haas Lifetime Achievement Award from Preservation Pennsylvania. Pennrose has developed more than 10,000 affordable housing units in six states.
