HUD releases: fair housing, Jackson, FHA
- HUD logged a record 10,328 housing discrimination complaints in FY 2006, with race and disability "virtually tied" for most frequent basis of discrimination. The annual report describing these and detailing HUD's fair housing work is over here. Suppose it's possible the high complaint volume might be a good sign: maybe HUD has persuaded people they'll be heard if they take the trouble to complain.
- Secretary Jackson was in Memphis on Saturday mourning Bishop G.E. Patterson of the Church of God in Christ. Other mourners included former President Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, and thousands of others. (Background on the church and its worldwide reach here.)
- It looks like the HUD-drafted FHA bill is now HR 1752, the "Expanding American Homeownership Act," sponsored by Reps. Biggert and Bachus. (But just how much farther do they think American homeownership can expand?) There's a statement from Secretary Jackson about it here. Although the main THOMAS site doesn't seem to have HR 1752 yet, you can get the bill's text and status from the lists of Rep. Biggert's sponsored bills or Rep. Bachus' cosponsored bills.
