AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINANCE
• November 2008
As part of a program with Neighborhood Housing Services of New Orleans, a group of
Tulane University architecture students use their skills to build an affordable home.
A DOCUMENTARY SERIES following a
group of Tulane University architecture
students as they design and build a
single-family home in a low-income
neighborhood of New Orleans has been
airing on the Sundance Channel.
Filmed during the 2007-2008 school
year, Architecture School takes viewers
through the construction of the third
home in Tulane’s URBANbuild program.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of
New Orleans, a partner in the program,
ultimately owns the house and sells it to a
low- or moderate-income family.
“The program provides students with
an invaluable opportunity to learn about
the realities of developing affordable
housing and the practical experience of
building a house,” says Lauren Anderson,
CEO of NHS. “It has given us an opportunity
to test building systems and energyefficiency
techniques. We’ve used a
different building system for each of three
houses built under the program.”
